Does a Chihuahua Need a Coat in Winter? What to Put On Your Chihuahua

By the PuppyUnion team · Updated

Yes – most Chihuahuas need a sweater or coat in cold weather. They're tiny, lean and often short-haired, so they lose heat fast; many are uncomfortable below about 45°F (7°C) and need an insulated coat below freezing (32°F / 0°C). Most adult Chihuahuas wear XXS or XS.

Sweater or coat?

WeatherWhat works
Cool and dry, or a cold houseA soft, stretchy sweater or hoodie
Below freezing, wind, snowAn insulated winter coat that covers the chest and belly
Rain or sleetA lined raincoat – wet fur loses warmth fast
Cold nightsLight pajamas if your home is cool and your dog shivers at night

Sizing a Chihuahua

  • Typical chest girth is about 9–14" (23–36 cm) and back length about 6–10" (15–25 cm) – reference only.
  • Measure the chest under the fur behind the front legs and add about 2" (5 cm). Many Chihuahuas need XXS; an XS that gapes at the chest won't keep them warm.
  • Check the neck: a big head and a small neck means the neck opening should stretch over the head without being loose once on.
  • Avoid heavy coats that drag or restrict movement – a tiny dog needs light, warm layers.

Winter tips for tiny dogs

  1. Keep walks short on very cold days and use the "feels like" temperature.
  2. Take wet clothes off as soon as you're home and dry your dog.
  3. Watch for shivering, lifting paws or refusing to walk – go back inside.
  4. Take coats off indoors so your dog doesn't overheat.

Very young, old or underweight Chihuahuas are more sensitive to cold. If yours seems weak or lethargic after being out in the cold, call your vet.
